What is pipe cleaning?
Pipe cleaning describes measures for cleaning a wide variety of pipes, lines and pipe systems.
Mechanical pipe cleaning systems involve a cleaning body (rubber sponge balls or pigs) that is moved through the pipe to remove deposits on the pipe wall.
A pig is a running or fitting body that travels through a pipeline and is driven by a propellant or the product to be conveyed. Pigs are provided with an oversize which creates a pre-tension to the pipeline and completely seals the pipeline upstream and downstream of the pig. Pigs can only be used on one side due to their structure.
A rubber sponge ball is the simplest, passive pig type in the form of a ball. It rotates through the pipeline and, unlike the conventional pig, can be conveyed in any direction. Rubber sponge balls seal on their circumference against the pipe wall.
The pigs and sponge balls are mainly used for filling, draining, separating, drying and cleaning pipelines.
Filling, emptying, separating: Pigs are ideal tools for filling and emptying processes in hydrostatic tests and liquid transportation. Furthermore, pigs are ideal for separating different media that are to be conveyed through the same pipeline one after the other.
Drying: After pressure tests, drying must be carried out without leaving any residue, especially in the case of gas pipes. Open-pored, low-density pigs are ideal for this process.
Cleaning: Pigs and sponge balls remove media residues from pipelines with high cleaning performance as well as rust, deposits and foreign bodies.

Offline processes are characterized by the fact that the system to be cleaned must be taken out of operation for pipe cleaning in order to insert the cleaning agent(s) and carry out the cleaning process.
The cleaning bodies (pigs/cleaning balls) are moved through the pipes using compressed air, water or another conveying medium. In most cases, cleaning is carried out by the oversize of the cleaning elements compared to the inner diameter of the pipe.
In the online process, the cleaning body moves with the pumped medium through the pipes and cleans them by its oversize compared to the inner diameter of the pipe. These cleaning bodies are sponge rubber balls in the diameter range up to around 50 mm; pigs are used in larger nominal diameter ranges up to oil pipelines. Sponge rubber balls are mainly used for cooling water such as lake, river or cooling tower water.

After inserting a rubber sponge ball, a cleaning nozzle fitted with a pressure gauge and a pressure release valve is attached to the start of the delivery line and a catch basket is attached to the end of the line. By applying compressed air, the cleaning ball is pressed through the pipe and cleans the pipe.

The selection of the suitable ball diameter is determined on the basis of the pressure loss between the inlet and outlet of the heat exchanger.
