What is Sewer Test and Barrier Technology?

Sewer Test and Barrier Plugs are designed for the quick and reliable sealing or blocking of sewers, pipes and drainage inlets. These are mainly used for repairs, maintenance, accidents and leak tests with water or air in accordance with DIN EN 1610 for newly laid or renovated pipelines. Their easy handling ensures quick and safe sealing of pipes. Leaking pipes pose a risk to soil, groundwater and buildings. Wastewater can seep into the ground through leaking pipes. This can contaminate the soil and affect the quality of the groundwater. Pipe plugs are used, for example, by various water management organizations, in civil engineering, in industry and in emergency services as well as by the fire department.

In addition to the test and shut-off bladders, pipe shut-off disks are used to quickly and reliably test and shut off pipes and ducts. They were specially developed for space-saving sealing of pipes.

Our product world

SuS GmbH Schwerin has been developing and selling test and shut-off bladders for various industries since 1993. In the course of this time, a comprehensive range of test and shut-off bladders in all dimensions and for a wide variety of applications has been developed. Semi-annual type tests (functional tests and 3-fold safety) are carried out in cooperation with TÃœV Nord.  This enables us to ensure the consistently high quality of our products. 

All test and barrier bladders are made of high-quality natural rubber material with a fabric insert. Compared to synthetically produced rubber, this offers a long service life, greater resistance and is also made from a renewable raw material

The following equipment is required when carrying out leak tests with air monitoring or negative air pressure:

  • Shut-off elements (shut-off disks or bladders)
  • Compressor or vacuum pump
  • Filling device incl. Pressure reducing valve or electronic pressure cut-off
  • Pressure measuring device
  • Device for logging and archiving measurement data

Pressurization of the pipe section to be tested, the pipe section or the pipe connection in the case of non-accessible wastewater pipes and sewers as well as checking and releasing the test pressure must be carried out safely from the top edge of the ground. Exceeding the test pressure must be prevented by – monitoring it via a pressure gauge and – limiting it to the specified value via a positively acting safety valve or an electronic pressure cut-off.

The pipe to be tested must be filled with water in such a way that the trapped air can escape at the shut-off element installed at the high point of the pipe, thus avoiding a hazard or incorrect measurement due to compressed air pockets. Once filling of the test chamber has begun, work in the adjoining pipes or shafts is not permitted for the duration of the test.
